Just a week after militants killed four armymen in south Kashmir, the security forces have killed one militant in an ongoing operation in south Kashmir's Shopian district.
A spokesman of Srinagar police headquarters said after getting specific information about the presence of militants, the security forces cordoned off Vandena village in Shopian district, 65 km away from Srinagar, on Friday.
"The hiding militants fired at the search party, triggering an encounter. One militant has been killed," said the spokesman.
Security forces used lights to ensure the hiding militants do not escape during the night. The combing operation is still on. Security forces refused to confirm any casualty on Saturday.
Police sources said the militant was killed in a field and other accomplices rushed towards a populated village. "We are searching the locality to flush out the rest of militants," said a police officer.
Security forces suspect presence of two militants in the cordoned area.
Deputy inspector general, South Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, said the identity of the slain militants is being ascertained. "They are hiding in a house," he said.
On May 24, militants killed four armymen in a surprise attack in south Kashmir's Tral area in Pulwama district.
The ongoing operation is on in a village bordering Pulwama district. Security forces refused to comment on whether these militants were behind the May 24 attack.
