Opposition boycotts Assam Assembly

india Updated: Jul 22, 2009 14:22 IST

Pandemonium prevailed in the Assam Assembly on Wednesday over reported remarks of a senior minister which led to a walk-out by the entire Opposition.

During question hour, Opposition leader and Asom Gana Parishad's member Chandra Mohan Patowary referred to some reported unparliamentary remarks made by health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

This led to protests by the ruling party members while the Opposition AGP, BJP and AUDF members stated that the "unfortunate" remarks lowered the dignity of the House.

A chaotic situation prevailed for more than half an hour as the ruling and Opposition members shouted even as Speaker Tanka Bahadur Rai urged members to exercise restraint.

Demanding withdrawal of the comments by the minister, the entire Opposition walked out of the House.

Later, Patowary told reporters that Opposition parties had decided not to participate in any of the replies made henceforth by Sarma in the House.

"It was unfortunate that the minister made such derogatory remarks against the Opposition AGP party. A complaint will be lodged with the Election Commission", he said.
