The Orissa government would set up two more open air jails near Berhampur and Sambalpur for prisoners from other jails.
Establishment of more open air jails was needed as the National Prison Policy suggested that prisoners should not be housed inside high walls for over two years, state's Inspector General (Prisons) V.Thiyagarajan said.
Currently, Orissa has only one open air jail at Jamajhori near Khurda and 88 other prisons.
Prisoners housed in other jails needed to be referred to open air jails where almost all facilities were available to rectify themselves, he said.
Work for establishment of the open air jail, for which 224 acre has been acquired at Jujumara, about 30 from Sambalpur, has started with Rs 1.50 crore allotted.
The total project cost for setting up the open air jail at Sambalpur was Rs five crore, he said.
Site selection for the open air jail here was yet to be finalised, he said.
About 100 acre was initially identified near Digaphandi, about 30 km from Berhampur. The site was rejected by the prison authorities as it was located in in a hilly area.
