The much-awaited test identification (TI) parade in the Kandhamal nun rape case was held at Choudwar Circle Jail in Cuttack district, nearly 40-km from Bhubaneswar on Monday. The nun identified two people including the main accused who allegedly raped her at K. Nuagaon town in Kandhamal district on August 25.
At around 1.15pm, the nun arrived in a white Ambassador car and drove into the jail compound escorted by a couple of police vehicles. The parade was conducted in the presence of a special magistrate and jail superintendent as armed cops kept tight vigil over the proceedings. “The nun could identify two persons including the main accused who raped her. She remained calm and composed during the entire exercise,” said a source present during the identification parade. The nun refused to speak to the media.
The sub-divisional judicial magistrate court in Kandhamal district on November 10 had rejected the nun’s pleato hold the parade in Delhi and asked her to come to Baliguda on November 19. The court again turned down the nun’s plea for the parade to be conducted in Delhi. The nun moved the Orissa High Court to hold the parade in Delhi or in Bhubaneswar or Cuttack in view of her traumatic condition, her security concerns and the assurance given by chief minister Naveen Patnaik earlier. The court on December 5 ordered to have the parade in Cuttack.
The nun had alleged that several policemen at K. Nuagaon saw her being assaulted and humiliated, but did not come to her rescue. Five policemen were subsequently placed under suspension. The sate government had earlier suspended K.N. Rao, inspector-in-charge of Baliguda police station, for not getting the medical examination report of the alleged victim for 38 days.
