ON WEDNESDAY, several eminent Lucknowites whose heart beats for their city got together to formulate their vision for Lucknow.
The initiative, taken by the Lucknow Management Association, (LMA) couldn’t have been timed better.
For the State Government is presently busy formulating a City Development Plan (CDP) for Lucknow which would pave the way for funding from the Government of India under the ambitious Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission. Lucknow is among the cities selected under the project. As Jayant Krishna, president of LMA explained, “The funding under the mission can potentially transform the face of Lucknow and make it among the best cities nationwide if the city plays its cards well.”
So, each and everyone who arrived at the venue came with a suggestion, each being worth its weight in gold and each having the potential to place the city among its higher ranked siblings—Mumbai and Delhi.
LMA has joined hands with the State Government to facilitate the process of developing a ‘vision’ for Lucknow 2020 as well as identifying the key development initiatives and institutional requirements.
Under the ‘Vision 2020’ plan, it was envisaged that Lucknow would become a major ‘knowledge economy’ in India with very significant investments in IT, ITES, bio-technology, scientific research and medical tourism besides having world class educational infrastructure producing top-quality ‘knowledge professionals’.
“The vision also is to place Lucknow among the top seven tourist destinations in India by positioning Awadh as a premier Nawabi and Raj heritage hub with a distinctive culture, food, art and craft,” Jayant who moderated the discussion that also took place, said.
Besides, having Lucknow among the top five livable cities in India by way of quality of life and human development leading to the sustained delight of citizens as well as visitors and investors from across the globe, was also recorded in the vision. On the occasion, after the vision was formulated and serialized, the city’s top development imperatives were: 24x7 water and electricity supply reaching 100 per cent populationEfficient sewerage, solid waste management system & hygienic public conveniences, World class public health facilities, Underground Metro Rail or Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS), world class airport, direct connectivity with top 10 Indian and key global cities, radio taxi Service with meters and an efficient bus service….
That’s not all. “CNG the only allowable fuel, for a greener, environment friendly city, arts & crafts haat, Multiple 5 star, 3 star and budget hotels, World class multi-sports stadium, World class multi-purpose complexes like India Habitat Centre… And…Encroachment-free city. Besides, efficient Road and Trafic Management, flyovers or sub-way at all traffic congestion points. Complete Slum Réhabilitation. Cleaner Gomti and riverside development. Quality College and University Education infrastructure in the Private Sector.
Also, Export Processing Zone for knowledge based industries and immediate development of LIDA industry corridor, wired city with a sustainable e-governance model for citizen services, reviving Hazratganj’s lost glory and city’s heritage restoration! That makes a good picture, isn’t it?
