Over 15 children were reported sick on Thursday with chickenpox-like symptoms — fever and boils on their body — in Maharajganj area of Chhatarpur district.
After locals suspected that it could be chickenpox, a team of doctors was sent by the chief medical and health officer (CMHO), Chhatarapur, to Maharajganj, to ascertain the disease and start treatment of the sick children. By evening, eight children had been referred to the government hospital at Badamalhara.
Talking to HT over phone, Chhatarapur CMHO Dr KK Chaturvedi said that a medical team was investigating the symptoms to ensure that the affected children get the right treatment.
"There is unprecedented heat in this area because of which water resources have almost dried up. There are chances that some children might have bathed or eaten fish from these muddy water bodies, which must have led to some infection. We are trying to find out whether it is chicken pox or some skin infection," he said.
According to locals, the sick children first reported itching sensations on their skin, which then developed into boils and subsequently they got fever.
These symptoms made residents suspect that it could be chickenpox and they alerted the health officials.
