OVER TWO hundred workers were trapped following a massive fire accident at Goodlass Nerolac paint unit in Jainpur industrial area of Kanpur Dehat, some 60 km from here. Nearly a dozen fire tenders were at the site to contain the leaping flames. Movement of vehicles on the busy national highway II was stopped to facilitate firefighting operation.

SDM (Dehat) Ghanshyam confirmed one employee with 30 per cent burns was hospitalised and efforts were on to rescue those trapped inside. The district has only one fire tender, while fire tenders from Kanpur city, Jalaun and Auraiya took hours to reach the place. According to officials on the site, the entire manufacturing unit was destroyed and initial assessment of loss was pegged at Rs 15-20 crore.

The fire could have been more devastating if highly inflammable neptha and thinner chemicals available in substantial quantity weren’t removed in time or the flames had reached out to the store. Eyewitnesses said the fire broke out around 5.15 pm in the Industrial and decorative section of the factory. Some local residents said that after about half an hour a fire tender from Bhognipur in Kanpur Dehat was called by the factory managment. Later, as the district magistrate was recently transferred and the SP was on leave, the CDO holding the DM’s charge reached the factory along with additional SP Nand Kishore but they were allowed entry after an hour. Media persons were denied access to the site. ADM Ghanshyam confirmed injury to one worker.

Till filing of the report, eight fire tenders from various places had reached the spot.
