The Gurgaon police arrested 165 people and issued challans to 169 others for drunk driving last weekend.
The action came under the police department’s ‘Respect the Road’ initiative by which they are trying to prevent accidents due to drunk driving and nab offenders.
Teams have been deputed outside pubs and bars on MG Road and Gurgaon Expressway till Diwali.
“The road safety drive was launched to focus on drunk driving. We want to educate people against the ill-effects of drinking and driving. We will keep a tight vigil during the festive season and early winters as liquor consumption goes up and so does the chance of accidents,” said Bharti Arora, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Gurgaon.
Drivers found with blood alcohol content of more than 30mg per 100ml are being arrested on the spot, said police officials.
“Police personnel, provided with alcometers (breathalyzers), are keeping a watch to nab violators near pubs, bars, discotheques and liquor vends. Offenders are being arrested under the Motor Vehicle Act. If found guilty, a person can be punished with imprisonment up to six months or a fine of R1,000 or both,” Arora added.
It is advised to hire a taxi or appoint a driver who does not drink, she said.
According to the police, 10,592 challans have been issued for drunk driving in Gurgaon in the last nine months.
Of this, 60 persons have been arrested while 13 were sent to judicial custody.
A total of nearly 2.5 lakh traffic violation cases have been registered this year.
