A total of 77.05% voters in Assam across six Lok Sabha constituencies exercised their franchise as the state's third phase of polling ended at 5pm on Thursday.

Though largely peaceful, polling was marred by two incidents of violence in which two people, including a cop, were killed while 16 were injured.

In the sensitive Kokrajhar constituency, one police constable was killed and two others injured when supporters of two candidates attacked a police party at Harabhanga polling station.

There was also a clash between supporters of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and the Congress at Nagarbera area under Guwahati constituency.

One AIUDF worker was killed while 14 others were injured.

But voters turned up in large numbers despite the temperature almost touching 40 degrees Celsius in Guwahati and other constituencies.

"Till 5pm, the polling was just above 77.05%. But the figure will go up as polling continues in some polling booths," said additional chief electoral officer RC Jain.

The turnout was highest in Dhubri constituency at 81.97%, followed by Mangaldoi at 80.01%, Kokrajhar at 77.74%, Nagaon at 75.33%, Barpeta at 74.21% and Guwahati at 74.06%.

There were reports of malfunctioning EVMs from several polling booths. "The defective EVMs were replaced and new machines were installed at the polling booths", said Jain.

A total of 74 candidates are in the fray in this phase.

Prominent candidates in this phase include AIUDF chief Barduddin Ajmal from Dhubri, BJP vice-president and Guwahati's sitting MP Bijoya Chakraborty seeking re-election, former Meghalaya governor and NSG chief Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary of Trinamool Congress from Kokrajhar, and former Asom Gana Parisad president and now BJP member Chandra Mohan Patowary from Barpeta.
