There was no arrest, no protest either when hate-speech accused Majlis-e Ittehadul-Muslimin (MIM) legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi landed at the Hyderabad airport in the early hours of Monday. Instead, he received a quiet welcome from his party leaders.

The MIM leader, who had been in the eye of a nationwide storm over his alleged hate speeches and has had four cases filed against him, had gone to London for treatment of an unspecified illness.

The police, which had managed to forestall a rousing reception at the airport, was nevertheless criticised for failing to arrest him.

Following an examination by a team of doctors from his Deccan hospital, Owaisi, who had to appear in the morning before the police at Nirmal - where he allegedly delivered some of the speeches - asked for a postponement.

But unconvinced by the medical report, the police reached Owaisi's house in the evening with a team of doctors. The police presence created tension for a while, but the police soon left without making an arrest.

Later in the day, the MLA moved the high court, seeking quashing of the cases against him. After Adilabad, Nizamabad and Hyderabad, the fourth case against him was filed in Warangal on Monday.

The ethics committee of the assembly, meanwhile, discussed the question of disciplinary action against Owaisi.

"We will view the video footage of his speech and make necessary recommendations to the speaker during the next assembly session," said committee member Satyananda Rao.
