“There was breach of ceasefire as Pakistan resorted to mortar shelling. Our troops retaliated with small arms,” said Srinagar-based army spokesman Col Brijesh Pandey.

He said two-three posts atop Haji Peer hill area came under heavy firing from the Pakistani side in Uri, 106 km north of Srinagar, around 3.15am. Haji Peer is barely four km off Uri town.

The exchange of fire lasted for around an hour and 15 minutes. “There was no casualty on our side,” Pandey said. The army said Pakistani shelling damaged houses in Churandah village near Haji Peer.

The Pakistani army has claimed Indian troops raided their Sawan Patra check post.

It said one Pakistani soldier was killed and another injured in Indian firing. The Pakistani army also claimed to have only retaliated to Indian firing.

Pandey, however, said the shelling from PoK was “clearly an attempt on their part to facilitate infiltration of militants”.

In 2012, Jammu and Kashmir saw around 150 infiltration bids. In July a 400-metre-long tunnel was detected in Samba sector.

On December 26, 2012, gunshots from the Pakistani side killed an Indian soldier, sepoy Rakesh Kumar, in Poonch district of Jammu region.

According to a report compiled by the Jammu and Kashmir home ministry, 71 incidents of border firing took place along the LoC and International Border in 2012.

India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on the LoC in 2003.
