A Pakistan Air Force Mirage fighter plane crashed near the southern city of Karachi on Wednesday but the pilot ejected safely, the military said.

The French-built jet came down in the uninhabited area of Mangho Pir on the outskirts of Karachi, air force spokesman Mohammad Qasim said.

An investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of the crash, the spokesman said.

The Pakistan Air Force fleet includes US-built F-16s, French Mirages and Chinese aircraft.
