A Pakistani national was able to hoodwink authorities and get himself registered as a voter and buy land until the police arrested him on Thursday following an inquiry by the local intelligence.

The accused, Mohammed Idris’ (62), along with family came to India when he was four. His father was with the Pakistan army who, upon retirement, moved to Nahal area of Ghaziabad.

The accused came to the country on a long-term visa. According to rules, he is not allowed to purchase land. But in December 2008, he bought 14 bighss of agricultural land for Rs 7.5 lakh from a Modi Nagar resident and later sold it to two of his sons and wife.

He procured a voter identity card from Dhaulana constituency —another visa violation.

Apart from several irregularities, Idris is presently out on bail in a dowry-related case registered by his daughter-in-law through a court order at Garhmukteshwar police station. He was later released on bail. The police have arrested Idris on charges of cheating, forgery and violations of provisions of the Foreigners Act and an FIR has been registered.
