Panchayat poll: Firing incidents reported at several places in MP

Firing incidents were reported at several places on the day of polling for panchyat election in Bhind and Morena districts of the state. However, no causalities have been reported from violence-affected villages.

Firing incidents were reported at several places on the day of polling for panchyat election in Bhind and Morena districts of the state on Tuesday. However, no causalities have been reported from violence-affected villages.

A polling team, which was returning to Bhind district headquarter from village Pannapura, was attacked by about 50 armed miscreants. The miscreants looted the EVM machines and ballot boxes from the polling team.

In village Karol of Bhind district, a group of armed persons barged into the polling booth and beat up the polling team. The miscreants also broke the EVM machines and tore ballot papers. The miscreants fired gunshots in air and chased away the people who had come to polling booth for casting their votes.

In a similar incident, a band of armed miscreants tried to snatch weapons of policemen deployed at polling booth of Khurd village of Bhind district. According to police sources, there was brief encounter between miscreants and policemen. However, no causality was reported.

Firing incidents were also reported in village Rari, Remja, Naudha and Nisar of the district. District collector Madhukar Agney said that polling at village Karola had been cancelled and re-polling would be conducted there on January 15.

Bhind superintendent of police (SP) Vinit Khanna said that cases had been registered against unidentified miscreants and investigation was on. "We are establishing the identity of the miscreants and they would be nabbed soon," he said.

In Morena district, firing incidents were reported in at least five polling booths. Police have detained over 12 persons and have also launched hunt for others who were reportedly involved in these incidents.

According to police, firing was reported between two groups at village Kuretha of Morena district, wherein two persons have suffered injuries. At pura polling booth of the district, two persons sustained injuries in firing between two groups.

In Rajapur village of Sagar district, villagers attacked a polling team and tried to loot the ballot papers. Villagers also pelted stone on SDM Atendra Singh Gurjar.
