The Panchayats of two Gujjar villages near Faridabad on Sunday issued a diktat against a newlywed couple to separate from each other and apologise for their actions within two days. The Panchayat ruled that the actions of the couple were unacceptable to the Gujjar community in the villages of Bakuri and Ghazipur.

Police said Nagindra, a resident of Bakuri village, belonging to the fagna gotra and a girl from Ghazipur, belonging to the bhadana gotra had eloped recently and got married.

However, the Bakuri-Ghazipur villagers took the matter seriously since boys and girls from these villages are not allowed to marry each other.

"The man, double the girl's age, forced her to flee with him — which is not acceptable to us," said Mahinder Bhadana, a Gujjar leader.

"The Panchayat of 12 Gujjar villages served an ultimatum to the couple to present themselves before the Panchayat within two days," added Bhadana.

"The couple should apologise to their parents and to the Panchayat for their actions," said Giriraj Singh, another Gujjar leader from Pali.
