Dr Ramakanta Panda, who led the 11-member team that successfully performed high-risk heart bypass surgery on Prime Minister Monmohan Singh at AIIMS, New Delhi, on saturday, has had a long journey before reaching the pinnacle in the medical profession.
Born and brought up in a poor family at Damdarpur in Jajpur district in Orissa, Dr Panda faced a lot of difficulties in continuing his studies during his school days. He travelled 16 km every day from his village to reach Pritipur High School.
The silver lining in his difficult times was his school headmaster Satish Chandra Das who guided and encouraged him to continue with his education.
"Where he is now is because of Pritipur High School head master Satish Chandra Das who used to show dreams to fullfil his long-cherished dream," Dr Panda's mother Sarala Panda told PTI over the phone.
"Panda had good track record and never missed his classes. He used to start his day to school at 6 am and it usually took three hours to reach the school. He was always inclined to the study and respected his elders," she said.
"I am very proud for him. He is a gold. He is an obedient and calm person. Our school is proud of producing a student like Ramakanta Panda," said a school teacher of Dr Panda.
"Today, I am a very proud mother. My son is making headlines and he is now a darling of all. When I look back, it is hard to believe that Rama has successfully operated upon the Prime Minister," Sarla said.
