Residents of North Chennai on Wednesday complained of a heavy chemical smell, triggering panic about a possible gas leak from one of the chemical factories in the area.

Residents in North Chennai called up the fire service and police to complain about nausea, giddiness and eye burning due to a heavy chemical stench in the area. Fire service personnel and police officials started looking for a possible leak from among the 50-odd chemical factories located in the Tiruvottiryur-Korukkupet-Manali belt.

Pollution control officials also began a thorough scrutiny of the industrial establishments to check if poisonous gas had leaked or deliberately let out into the atmosphere.

The stench later subsided and residents, who had moved to other parts of the city, moved back home.

Chennai Police Commissioner Nanjil Kumaran intensified the search but found nothing amiss. Pollution control officials said there was virtually no upper air no circulation in that area.
