Assistant sub inspector (ASI) at Bhapoli police station Ravinder Singh, a relative of Sat Narayan, has also been arrested on charge of conspiracy.

Samalkha deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Bali Singh told Hindustan Times on Wednesday that during police interrogation victime's father and her brothers were upset over her inter-caste marriage and thus killed her.

“After strangulating her, the trio staged a drama that Meenakshi died of natural reasons and cremated her on Sunday morning. They claimed that even Meenakshi’s mother Nirmala was not aware that she was killed for bringing a bad name to the family by marrying against the family's wishes,” said the DSP.

The girl, believed to be 19-year-old, had ran away with Annu of Bahadugarh village near Safidon town of Jind district.

DSP clarified that while girl belonged to Nai caste, Annu was a member of Bairagi community.

Both belonged to Other Backward Class (OBC) and girl’s family had disapproved the marriage.

Samalkha DSP also said that Annu had been asked to produce his marriage documents in the court.

Meanwhile, station house officer (SHO) of Bhapoli police station, Deepak Kumar, has been shifted to the police lines for dereliction in the duty.

“When Meenakshi ran away from her house few days back, ASI Ravinder helped Sat Narayan in locating the girl without registering a complaint. As he was found prima facie guilty of helping the family who later killed her, Ravinder was arrested for being part of the crime. SHO Deepak failed to check on the activities of his subordinating staff but he was not a part of murder,” he said.
