Tamil Nadu governor K Rosaiah on Sunday invited AIADMK treasurer and finance minister in Jayalalithaa government, O Panneerselvam, to form the new government after he was duly elected as the leader of the AIADMK legislature party.
The chief minister designate called on the government and submitted a letter communicating the decision to the Governor at Raj Bhavan late on Sunday evening.
No date or time has yet been communicated when the ministry formation would take place.
The AIADMK had to elect a new year to replace former chief minister J Jayalalithaa was convicted for four years in disproportionate assets case by a special court in Bangalore and automatically was disqualified to be an MLA.
For Panneerselvam this would be the second time as chief minister in the state, as he had earlier in 2001 filled in for Jayalalithaa who at that time was disqualified by the Supreme Court after her conviction in another corruption case.
Jayalalithaa fought a legal battle to get the conviction reversed and returned to office in 2002.
