Pappu can pledge

india Updated: Oct 02, 2008 21:17 IST

There are no jail walls strong enough to hold back a charitable spirit. Or so it can be said about Tihar Jail’s flamboyant lifer and bleeding heart, Bihar MP from Madhepura, Rajiv Ranjan a.k.a Pappu Yadav. Mr Yadav has pledged Rs 4 crore towards Bihar flood relief efforts, despite most Bihar MPs, including his MP wife Ranjita Ranjan, keeping their MP Local Area Development Scheme booty locked in tight. His munificence must be lauded, especially given the tightfistedness of our netas who have barely pledged Rs 30 crore altogether. But then, there’s many a swindle between a pledge and a bundle, as it so often is with such promises.

But we must put more faith in Mr Yadav, who is not only a generous spirit but also a career crusader. In the past, he’s taken up the cudgels to protest foul play against his cricket team at the ‘Tihar Olympics’. And ever so quick in offering things for a cause, he even offered his family and himself up in a suicide threat against the ‘mental torture’ meted out to him by the jail authorities.

Perhaps he believes in the golden oldie that what goes around comes around, as his seat from Madhepura was also a charitable gesture from party supremo Lalu Prasad. Now only if the Rs 4 crore could buy him enough goodwill to bail him out of a life behind bars.
