Highlight Story

Two companies of para-military forces have been pressed into service for relief operations in Porbander and Junagadh districts, the worst affected by torrential rains in Gujarat during the last three days.

Nearly 200 para-military personnel along with local authorities and NGOs in Porbander and Junagadh district are engaged in relief operations, officials said.

Though sporadic rains were recorded in some parts of the state, the two districts were spared of heavy rains today, which helped the relief operation, they said.

Porbander District Collector M B Parmar said relief works were on and the water had begun receding in the district. He said road traffic was likely to be restored soon.

Life in coastal town Veraval of Junagadh district is returning to normal after three days of torrential rains.

The town has received record rainfall of over 1700 mm this year, breaking a 45-year-old record.

In 1964, the coastal town had received near about 1400 mm of rainfall.
