A 20-year-old woman was allegedly killed for “honour” by her parents and maternal uncle while she was sleeping in her home in Nagla Badshah village near Aligarh on Tuesday.

Shahroon Khan was stabbed with a sharp weapon after her family discovered she was in love with a young man from a nearby village, police said.

“Her parents, uncle and other family members went missing after committing the crime and two police teams are searching for them,” Aligarh Senior Superintendent of Police Vijay Prakash said on Wednesday.

The police were tipped off about the crime by Shahroon’s younger brother, who was found hiding in a relative’s house.

The brother has been taken into police custody for interrogation.

Shahroon’s relationship with Riyasat Khan (24) was discovered by her family members when they followed her to Bulandshahar, 80 km from Aligarh, where she was meeting Riyasat.

Her parents thrashed her when she came home on Monday evening and locked her in a room at night. They killed her the next morning and fled.

Neighbours, who noticed the house was quiet, peeped in and discovered Shahroon’s body.

Riyasat and his family members also fled their home instead of coming forward to help the police with the investigation.

Shahroon met Riyasat, the unemployed son of a farmer, at a marriage a year ago.
