Former Indian wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel has been named as the new captain of Gujarat's cricket team for the upcoming Ranji trophy matches, officials said in Ahmedabad on Monday.
Parthiv replaces veteran Mukund Parmar, who retired as the team captain at the end of the 2005-06 year's Ranji season.
The Ahmedabad-based wicketkeeper, who had made it into the Indian team at an early age, was shunted out from both the Test and one-day sides after a string of poor performances.
He had last played a one-day international match for India in 2004 at Nagpur against Australia while his last one-day outing was against Sri Lanka at Colombo in July 2004.
The Gujarat Ranji team for the first two Ranji Trophy matches has also been announced, said Anshuman Gaekwad, chief coach of the team.
Gujarat will take on Rajasthan at Sardar Patel stadium at Motera, Ahmedabad from November 23-26 and will travel to Mohali for an encounter against Punjab from December 1-4, 2006.
"Parthiv will remain the captain for the entire Ranji season while the composition of the team could be decided depending on the performances of the players (in the first two matches)," Gaekwad added.
Team: Parthiv Patel (capt, wk), Nilesh Modi, Aakash Christian, Niraj Patel, Kiran Damani, Bhavik Thakkar, Azar Bilakia, Timil Patel, Jayesh Makala, Sahil Patel, Lalit Patel, Ashraf Makda, Hitesh Majumdar, Amit Singh.
