WHAT’S IN a birthday? Everything. Major political parties in Uttar Pradesh are indulging in a birthday politics when Vidhan Sabha election is virtually knocking on the door.
Politics and birthday go together in the cow belt. So much so that political parties have planned to celebrate the birthday of their leaders as an election campaign.
Coincidentally, top leaders of all major parties will be celebrating their birthdays in coming months, before the Vidhan Sabha campaign starts rolling.
Samajwadi Party (SP) is the first to jump in the political birthday bash. SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav would be celebrating his 68th birthday on November 22.
The party has plans to observe his birthday as ‘Vikas Diwas’ (Development Day).
Development of the State would be the main agenda of Samajwadi Party in the Vidhan Sabha election. Yadav has called upon the party workers to create awareness among the people about the achievements of his government.
SP leader SRS Yadav said the party would highlight the achievements of the government through cultural programmes at State and district headquarters on November 22. The party had also planned a feast for poor children and old people on the occasion, Yadav said.
Archrival of Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party, has already planned to observe the birthday of party supremo Mayawati as ‘Sahyog Diwas’. Mayawati will celebrate her birthday on January 15. Party leaders have planned to raise fund for election campaign on the occasion.
Mayawati had told the party members that she does not require costly gifts on her birthday. “Give me hard cash that I require as funds for election campaign in three States including UP, Uttranchal and Punjab. I do not take funds from the business houses and solely depend on the party workers for raising election fund”, she told the party workers.
The Congress too does not want to be left behind in the birthday politics.
Though the party leaders are busy preparing for the’ jail bharo’ programme, at the same time, they are gearing up to celebrate the birthday of AICC president Sonia Gandhi falling on December 9. Senior Congress leader Satyadeo Tripathi said the party had planned to observe Sonia Gandhi birthday as ‘sankalp diwas’. “We would take pledge to rid the State from corrupt Samajwadi Party government in the coming Vidhan Sabha election”, he added.
Former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee will be celebrating his birthday on December 25. On the eve of Atal’s birthday, the BJP has planned to organise a massive political rally in Lucknow. Top BJP leaders including Atal Behari Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani, Rajnath Singh and Kalyan Singh will address the meet on December 24.
A senior BJP leader said, “We have planned to launch the campaign for Vidhan Sabha election on Atal’s birthday. Along with exposing the ruling Samajwadi Party, the BJP leaders will urge the people to bring the party back in power for sake of development of the State.”
