Agitated BJP workers shouted slogans against party MP Varun Gandhi on Saturday after he allegedly refused to attend a function in Nawabganj, 60 km from here.

According to party sources, Baburam, a BJP member, had organised a function to honour Gandhi. There, the chairman of Nawabganj, Kunwar Rabindra Singh Rathore, requested Gandhi to unveil some developmental works. However, Gandhi reportedly turned down his request saying Rathore should have sought prior appointment. Soon after Gandhi got into his car and drove off.

BJP Bareilly district unit president Pooran Lal Lodhi said he was unaware of any such incident. Rathore could not be reached for comments.

Official spokesperson of Gandhi, Anand Chaudhary said no such incident had taken place in his knowledge. He, however, said, “If anybody wants the MP to inaugurate or unveil any work, he should take prior appointment for it. There was no prior appointment for the programme.”
