Without doubt, Parvinder Singh’s century was the highlight of the day’s play at the Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta Stadium here, on Wednesday.
The way he scored, it would have left even the biggest connoisseurs of the game spell-bound. The Uttar Pradesh batsman dealt only in taps and nudges to the extent of making the game dull. But his patient innings did pave the way for a mammoth total of 536 for 7. And, considering that Delhi are without their top batsmen—Shikhar Dhawan (injured) and Mithnu Manhas (ill)—the target looks all the more daunting. The opening session’s play on Wednesday saw just 87 runs being scored. Clearly, Parvinder and partner Bhuvneshwar Kumar had made up their minds to frustrate the opposition bowlers. As a result, there were maidens galore, but not a single wicket.
Parvinder, who started the day on the overnight score of 36, reached 79 at lunch, while Bhuvneshwar, who added 37 to his overnight total of five, had 42 to show at the break. The second session, however, saw some activity with the bowlers bowling with renewed zeal and fielders doing their job with agility.
Parvinder Awana, in a bid to get his namesake’s wicket, sent down some fiery deliveries, with one even hitting the batsman’s shoulder. Consequently, more maidens followed and a few more run-less minutes passed away. Soon, it was business as usual for the two batsmen who started dealing in singles.
Finally, the moment came for which Parvinder had long been waiting for. A double off leggie Abhishek Sharma saw him reach his century.
Just when he decided to cut loose, Sharma lost his wicket playing a lofty shot. The scoreboard read 434 for five.
