'Passengers to Nankana Sahib facing problems'

india Updated: Jul 22, 2006 11:04 IST

Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday expressed shock over the "problems" being faced by the passengers travelling on the Amritsar-Lahore and Amritsar-Nankana Sahib bus service.

"I personally visited the international bus terminal in the city. I was shocked to see that there was not even a single passenger to Pakistan.

It is highly deplorable that in the absence of any clear-cut policy, we are forced to ply nearly empty buses on these routes," he said.

"The passengers wishing to travel on these routes are a harried lot and face myriad problems like difficulty in procurement of visa, police vetting and astronomical bus fares, due to which most of them are forced to abandon their plans for pilgrimage thereby dashing their long cherished hopes," the Lok Sabha MP said.

Blaming the Central government for lacking the sincerity of purpose, Sidhu said they were only "hoodwinking" people and were not interested in furthering the people-to-people contact.
