The prime suspect in Sunday’s Patna serial blasts, Ainul Ansari, died at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital in the state capital late on Thursday. With his death, the toll in Patna serial blasts has climbed to seven.
He had suffered serious brain injuries in an explosion at the Patna Junction that took place a few hours before BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s rally in Patna on October 27.
Ansari was caught while he was running away from a toilet at platform number 10 of the railway junction after the bomb exploded there.
"He succumbed to his injuries late last night," said Arun Kumar Singh, director of Patna's Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, adding, "A team of five doctors tried their level best to save him but he was unconscious and not responding to any medicines.”
A series of low-intensity blasts killed six persons and left over 90 injured at a public ground in Patna where hundreds of thousands had gathered to listen to Modi.
Ansari’s father arrived at the hospital on Friday morning but refused to talk to the media. “His body will be handed to his father after autopsy,” a police officer said.
The police said that Ansari suffered his injuries while he tried to strap two bombs around his waist. Some telephone numbers and documents were recovered from him on the basis of which the entire planning by the terrorists was uncovered.
The blasts have been blamed on the Indian Mujahideen. The government has since ordered that security be increased at election rallies.
