THE GB Patnaik report on mafia role in government contracts and other such illegal activities was the centre of discussion in the second session of the Vidhan Parishad when the House assembled to pass motion of thanks on Governor’s address.
Leader of the Teachers Group Om Prakash Sharma said though the Governor in his address had said that law and order had improved, the fact was that mafia rule had been established in UP. Mafia were targeting policemen and engineers.
Even the senior officers in the State agreed to the Patnaik report that mafia were ruling the roost in the State. In as far back as 1993, the then DGP Prakash Singh in his report had raised the demand for action against mafias.
RLD member Munna Singh Chauhan said the House should hold debate on criminalisation of politics. Those wanted by the police were being provided with police security, he said and blamed the district administration for providing security without checking the antecedent of the person. Ashok Dhawan of the BJP said law and order in the State had gone to the nadir. The people were not sure that they would return home safe once they stepped out of their houses. If the children did not return home from school on time, the family was tense, worrying if any untoward incident had taken place.
