US Representative Nancy Pelosi has made history by becoming the first woman to be elected speaker of the House of Representatives, placing her third in the line of succession to the presidency.

The California Democrat won with 223 votes, a majority of the 435 members of the House.

To rounds of cheers and applause, Pelosi took the speaker's gavel from Representative John Boehner, the now-minority leader, ending 12 years of Republican control of the lower house of Congress on Thursday.

The position makes her the highest-ranking woman in US government history.

"I accept this gavel in the spirit of partnership, not partisanship, and I look forward to working with you .
