Penguin Books India launches first e-book range

india Updated: Jul 20, 2012 12:41 IST

Penguin's Indian arm is making its first foray into the world of e-books, starting with 240 new publications from 2012, and calling it "the first extensive list of Indian ebooks to be published internationally by an Indian publisher."

The publisher is targeting major e-book retailers, including Amazon, Apple, Kobo, Google and Sony, meaning that Indian readers can purchase at international prices, with rupee values to follow as the local market develops.

The drive is being supported by the release of Penguin India's cross-platform app for Apple, Android, Blackberry and Nokia devices.

Penguin's plans mean that it has beaten Flipkart to market -- India's prominent online bookseller had revealed plans for diversification into e-books back in May but preferred to wait for the right moment to launch its campaign.

Penguin has already announced plans to republish some of the imprint's Indian classics, such as The God of Small Things, The Difficulty of Being Good, The Discovery of India, Gitanjali and Train to Pakistan.
