Following discovery that three minor girls at a juvenile home had been raped, police arrested the peon and suspended the home superintendent. An “absolutely shocked” Allahabad High Court took note of the matter and directed that “an exemplary deterrent message goes out”.
The three girls lived in the state-run home located in Shivkuti police station area of the city. The incident came to light when another inmate, a 10-year-old girl, was recently adopted by a couple. In the course of their interactions with the adopted child, the couple learnt about the horrific goings on in the juvenile home and soon after alerted the superintendent Urmila Gupta.
Further enquiries revealed that the 50-year-old peon Vidyabhushan Ojha had repeatedly raped some inmates of the home, and thereafter threatened them with dire consequences should they mention it to anyone.
Following his arrest, Ojha confessed to have sexually assaulted at least three inmates. After the girls —in the age group of 8-12 years — identified him, they were taken for a medical test which established rape.
The district probationary officer suspended Gupta on the charge of negligence and terminated the services of Ojha. A three-member team has been set up by the district magistrate who ordered that an inquiry be conducted and a report submitted for further action.
