ON THE eve of Akshay Tritiya on April 30, Minister for Women and Child Development Kusum Mehdale has written a letter to chairpersons of district, nagar and janpad panchayats, sarpanchs and panchs, mayors and chairpersons of municipal corporation and councils and well as corporators/councilors, appealing to them to prevent child marriages in their respective areas.

The Minister had also urged these people’s representatives not to attend any programme or function where there might be a possibility of child marriage being performed.

Mehdale said child marriages were traditionally performed on a large number on Akshay Tritiya Day and there was a need to prevent them. Since the Gram Swaraj system was now active, local people’s representatives should ensure that such illegal activity was not held in their villages/areas, she said.  She urged panchayat representatives to get a resolution to this effect passed in their areas.

The Minister has also appealed to intelligentsia, social reformers, legal experts, medicos, teachers and common people to ensure that no child marriage was held in their knowledge and neither should they attend any such ceremonies.

She said this was a social evil wherein physically and mentally immature children were married off without thinking of the ill effects on them. The worst sufferers were girls who become mothers at an early age when their bodies were not able to bear childbirth.

She said only legal provisions cannot help eradicate the evil and cooperation of the society was of utmost importance.
