Samajwadi Party

The Samajwadi Party (SP) state president Akhilesh Yadav said that the party's government would stake claim to form government after the SP Parliamentary board meeting scheduled on Wednesday.

"The new government would be progressive and development oriented and would implement the party manifesto in entirety. It would be good governance. UP is badly backward and we want to take it towards prosperity," he said at the press conference he held soon after the party crossed victory on 150 seats.

He said: "Without doubt, people have voted for SP rising above caste and religion factors. It is quite clear not that we are close to majority. People have posed faith in us, and we will live up to the faith they showed in us. We express our gratitude to them for this faith."

Akhilesh also added that corruption had crossed unimaginable proportions leading to so many murders.

When asked about fear of return of goondaraj expressed by opponents, he said: "All through the campaign and election time, I have been asked this question. And every time we said that anyone playing with law and order would not be spared."

To another question on seeking support from any independent 'mafia' winner, he said: "there is no question of seeking any support from any mafia winner."

On Muslim agenda he said that the party was committed to implement it. "We will implement all the do-ables that a state can implement from the recommendations of Sachchar Committee or Rangnath Mishra commission. There will be modernisation in minorities' education."

Akhilesh also said that none of the statues in the monuments (made by Mayawati government) would be removed. "They would stay intact, but a lot of empty-waste spaces in those monuments would be utilised."

On the defeat of rivals, he said: "Victories and defeats are part of politics. We were losers yesterday and we accepted that defeat. And when one is winner one has to do thanksgiving."

On Rahul Gandhi he said: "I never did politics of comparison. I never compare myself with others. It was media that did all the comparisons."

When asked about action on corruption of the outgoing government, he said it was the time to say thanks to people and think goodness. Those things would happen in its own time following proper investigations.
