Harinder Singh, vice-chairman and managing Director of Percept Communications, an events and corporate communications company, was detained in Dubai after 15 tablets of the ‘recreational drug’ ecstasy were found on him.
Sources close to Singh told the HT on condition of anonymity that he was picked up from his hotel room at Bar Dubai early on June 5 and was being interrogated. Two other people, as yet unidentified, were also arrested.
On Thursday, Percept’s corporate communications head Sangeeta Chacko refused to comment, saying they are yet to receive information from Harinder or his younger brother, Shailendra, who rushed to Dubai after news of the arrest. She also refused to give Harinder’s or his lawyer’s numbers in Dubai. “The lawyer won’t talk to the media as the matter is sub-judice,” Chacko said. Sources said Harinder was a frequent visitor to Dubai, where Percept has an office.
There were unconfirmed reports that his name was dropped by DJ Aqeel Ali, who was detained earlier this week for possessing the same drug. A protracted legal battle seems in the offing as United Arab Emirates laws are very tough on drug possession. “Possessing drugs, however small the quantity, is a serious offence here,” Mehta said.
