‘Simply Fly is a determined man’s efforts to follow his dreams’
Read: Sudha Menon, author, Legacy
The God Of Small Things Arundhati Roy
I like it for its almost lyrical prose. I could visualise everything Roy was saying in her book. A couple of years ago, I visited Ayemenem, Roy’s ancestral home in Kottayam
village in Kerala, which is also the house in which the book is set. It was like walking into the book itself. Roy is a
master storyteller.

Simply Fly Captain Gopinath An inspirational story that will move the most hardened and cynical people. It is the story of a determined man’s efforts to follow his dreams, travel around the world, climb the Himalayas and work with his bare hands to make a barren piece of land fertile. It is proof of the enduring
fighting spirit of human beings.

Why My Third Husband Will Be A Dog Lisa Scottoline It is easily one of my most favourite reads of recent times. Scottoline has found many female admirers who love the fact that she is able to make fun of the things women do to look young and thin.
Em And The Big Hoom Jerry Pinto I laughed and cried with the boy in the book and the story of his mentally ill mother and their tragic-comic life together. Each of us will see something that we can identify with in Pinto’s book.

To Kill A Mockingbird Harper Lee The story, set in such a complex part of American history, has its own simplicity and innocence, even though it deals with a difficult topic. Atticus Finch, the father of the narrator of the story reminds me of my own father — he is honest, upright and uncompromising when it comes to the truth.

‘Smile has the most meaningful words that draw a lesson for life’
Listen: Akriti Kakkar, singer
Tere bin nahi lagda dil mera dholna
Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan This song is an all-time favourite and never ceases to give me goosebumps every time I hear it. Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s
rendition is impeccable and so is the composition. The song
is intricate, yet intoxicating.

Mehrmaa ve Akriti This song is composed by Shankar Mahadevan. Being my own, the entire album stays close to my heart, since creating a music album of my own was what I always wanted to do. It bagged the Global Indian Music Award for the best popular non film album last year.

Kate nahi raat mori 99.9 FM This song is sung by Ustad Sultan Khan and produced by Salim and Sulaiman Merchant. The lyrics of the song are beautiful, making it one of my favourite songs.

Smile Nat King Cole Smile is a song based on an instrumental theme used in the soundtrack for the 1936 Charlie Chaplin movie Modern Times.
It has to be an ultimate favourite because of its composition,
message, the voice and the
most meaningful words that draw a lesson for life.

Piya tose naina lage re Guide This song composed by SD Burman and sung by Lata Mangeshkar was the first ever song I learnt from a movie and performed as a five-year-old in my first stage performance.

‘I have been going to Cafe Madras since my college days’
Eat: Ashish Sajnani, restaurateur owner, Opa
Cafe Madras Matunga
It is one of the oldest authentic south Indian restaurants in the city and I have been going there since my college days.
Its consistency and taste has remained constant with great food, fabulous filter coffee and an ever smiling gentleman at the cash counter.

Cellini at Grand Hyatt Kalina Since its inception, I have been going there for its wood-fired pizzas. They have an excellent wine selection and it’s a great place to eat after a late night party at Hyatt’s China House. One of its other plus points is that Cellini also has a great round-the-clock menu.

Yauatcha Bandra Kurla Complex I simply love everything about this place — the food, cocktails, ambience, service. They have a delightful selection of signature dishes like Truffle Edamame Dumpling, Chicken and Prawn Shumai, Crystal Dumpling and Har Gau that are lip smacking. They also have an interesting selection of teas.

Gallops Mahalaxmi The old school charm and the fabulous view always takes me back to this place. The highlight of this place is the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Melba toast along with its offering of old school Continental and Oriental cuisine.

Gajalee Vile Parle This place serves sea food at its best; the Bombil Fry and the Crab Masala curry are must-tries. In my view, the chutney served along with the starters is Gajalee’s USP. The highlight of this place is their consistency and fabulous pricing. — HTC

‘Through Pyaasa, Guru Dutt opens his heart to the audience’
Watch: Sriti Jha, actor
Pyaasa 1957 The film tells the story of a struggling poet, trying to make his works known in post-independence India, and a prostitute who helps him get his poems published. The late Guru Dutt is one of my favourite
directors. Through the film’s script, he opened his heart to the audience. It feels as through he is talking directly to them.

Amar Prem 1972 It is a based on a story called Nishipadma written by Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay, and stars Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna. The relationship between the two characters played by these actors is dealt with beautifully in this film.

Khamoshi 1969
This black-and-white film is directed by Asit Sen, and stars Rajesh Khanna and Waheeda Rehman. This film showcases veteran actor Waheeda’s best performances. It also has the most impactful silences.

Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne 1969 Directed by Satyajit Ray, this is a popular Bengali children’s film. It revolves around two people exiled from their respective villages — one for his bad singing and the other for bad drum playing — and how they end up being famous musicians.

City Lights 1931 It is an American romantic comedy written, directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin. The story follows the misadventures of a tramp as he falls in love with a blind girl and develops
a friendship with a millionaire. Charlie Chaplin is one of the great filmmakers and actors the world has seen.
