MADHYA PRADESH High Court here today adjourned for a week the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the suicide of a businessman, alleging that the deceased had taken the extreme step following police excesses in July 2004.

After hearing the counsel at length, the court directed the petitioners to submit an affidavit about the mode of harassment caused to the deceased by the police personnel.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice A K Patnaik and Justice Ajit Singh today heard the PIL alleging that the then Town Inspector of Omti police station Rajesh Tiwari and Constable Dhananjay Singh, who harassed the deceased, were reinstated within a few days of suspension even before the case was closed.

The PIL said no action was taken against these police officials whose names are mentioned in the dying declaration made by deceased jeweller Rajesh Soni. Therefore, these officials should be restrained from discharging their duties.
