Congress MP from Dausa, Sachin Pilot, talked to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the phone and met Home Minister Shivraj Patil, expressing concern over the Gujjar agitation.
He apprised them of the repression let loose by the BJP government on agitating Gujjars who are demanding inclusion in the ST category.
In Jaipur, to meet injured Gujjars in a government hospital. Pilot told HT that he had briefed the PM about the volatile situation in the state.
He said, “Patil talked about the details of the Centre’s response to the request from Rajasthan CM, Vasundhara Raje. It is for the state to solve the problem of the agitating community. I fail to understand Raje’s request to the PM to convene a CMs’ conference on reservation. States like Harayna and Madhaya Pradesh are not facing Gujjar problem.”
Pilot said the BJP had promised to give ST status to the Gujjars during the 2003 assembly polls, but backtracked when it came to power. “The BJP government has lost credibility after killing so many people and has no moral or constitutional right to stay in office. The government must accept the Gujjar demand at any cost,” he said.
