Two independent candidates in Mumbai filed their nominations for the Assembly election on the first day of nomination filing. While both the candidates are from the city’s suburbs, none of the constituencies in the island city received any nominations.
Independent candidate Lajras Thombe, 31, filed his nomination from Vile Parle, while another independent candidate Rakesh Arora, 54, filed from Anushakti Nagar.
The ongoing ‘Pitru Paksha’ – considered by Hindus to be inauspicious – and delay in announcing names of candidates are believed to be reasons for the low response on Day 1.
Most of the candidates are expected to file their nomination in the last three days of filing, after Pitru Paksha ends on September 24. The last day to file nomination is on September 27 and the final list of candidates will be out on October 1.
