PM council approves solar mission
The Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change approved the National Solar Mission, which aimed at solar generation target of 20,000 Megawatt by 2020. Chetan Chauhan reports.
The Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change on Monday approved the National Solar Mission, which aimed at solar generation target of 20,000 Megawatt by 2020.
The approval comes 10 days before the next round of negotiations on climate change begins in Bonn, Germany.
As of now, India generates about 500 MW of energy from solar sources.
If the target is achieved, 10 per cent of the estimated power to be generated by then would be from solar sources at a cost of Rs 90,000 crore. It would mean electricity to three cities of Delhi’s size.
It is the first of the eight missions — originally suggested by the council in 2008 — to get approval before the Bonn summit on August 14. “This document will be a key for our negotiations there,” said a council member, requesting anonymity, who is also India’s main climate change negotiator.
The members emphasised that India could now emphatically demand solar technology transfer without patents from rich countries to achieve the target stipulated in the mission
