Barely a week after the heads of five leading telecom companies raised various issues dogging the sector, prime minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said the government will address concerns of the telecom industry regarding policy issues.

“I am aware of some concerns of the telecom industry regarding government policies in the telecom sector,” said Singh. “I reassure industry of the government’s full commitment to sustain growth, creativity and enterprise in this vitally important sector of our economy.”

However, there is no consensus among all the service providers on important issues. For example, in a recent meeting with the communications and IT minister Kapil Sibal, honchos of five telecom service providers submitted two set of issues. One — key issues on which there is consensus amongst operators and — key issues on which there

should be consensus amongst operators. (See graphic) http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/HTEditImages/Images/08-12-buss-02.jpg

“The issues of old operators are very different from new operators,” said a CEO of a new operator. “Whenever policy has to be decided our issues should also be resolved.”
