Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit India’s largest warship INS Vikramaditya off the Goa coast on Saturday, his first domestic trip after taking over as PM on May 26.

Goa has been crucial in Modi’s political career. It was here that the BJP held its executive meeting in 2013 to give him the charge of the party’s election campaign, paving way for him to be eventually named as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate.

It was also at the BJP’s national executive in Goa in 2002 where senior BJP leader LK Advani rejected suggestions that he step down for failing to prevent the post-Godhra riots. Modi had led the party to victory months later in the Gujarat assembly elections, his first.

Modi is expected to begin his Goa visit with a meeting with state party leaders.

Navy chief Admiral Robin Dhowan had announced in May that the carrier was operational. The PM will get a glimpse of flight operations on the deck of 44,500-tonne aircraft carrier.
