In a thinly-veiled yet caustic attack on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, BJP leader Arun Jaitley has said only politicians should occupy the post of the country’s PM who should be a “natural leader” of his party and the country.
Speaking at a FICCI function on Saturday, the leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha said: "PMs must be the natural leaders of the country, certainly of their own party and government. PMs can never look helpless. PMs can not go back with a feeling that I am not being allowed to deliver."
The BJP has often in the past charged that the real power in UPA government lay with Congress president Sonia Gandhi and not the PM with Gandhi often having the “last word” in decision making.
Accusing the UPA government of failing to evolve consensus on economic decisions, Jaitley said: “We used to earlier say it is a lame duck government. I think closer truth is that it is dead duck government. Decision making by this government under this environment is not going to be possible.”
Referring to Congress debacle earlier this month in the recent assembly polls in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Chhattisgarh, he said that the message from the results was that state governments can beat anti-incumbency if they govern well.
“Good governance alone may not help you to win elections. Good governance blended with some clever politics may help you to win. But bad governance will certainly make you lose,” Jaitley said.
