PM urged to take steps to replace Medical Council of India

india Updated: May 08, 2010 18:49 IST

The All India Medical Association today requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take steps to replace Medical Council of India with a body of eminent persons having independent powers like Election Commission, in the wake of corruption charges against MCI chief Ketan Desai.

In a letter to Singh, the Association said the body should have independent constitutional powers and be capable of taking quick and firm decisions expeditiously on proposals for new colleges pending before the MCI.

Desai and three others were arrested by CBI last month in connection with a Rs two crore bribe for permitting a medical college in Punjab to admit students despite lack of infrastructure.
