Puducherry Munnetra Congress (PMC), a splinter group of the Congress, will support the Congress nominee in the May 13 polls to the lone Lok Sabha seat in the union territory.
Party founder P Kannan met AICC leader Sonia Gandhi in the capital on Saturday and pledged support to the Congress, a PMC spokesman told PTI from Delhi.
A source in the ruling Congress in Puducherry also confirmed it and said this was a "happy development".
Asked if the PMC, which has three MLAs in the territorial Assembly, would support the Congress Government headed by V Vaithilingam, the source said it was for the PMC to answer.
PMC had last week said it will support the Congress in the only if it was assured of a Rajya Sabha seat and wanted a written agreement between the two parties.
However, it could not be ascertained whether any agreement was reached between the two parties on this demand.
In the meanwhile, party sources said AICC General Secretary V Narayanasamy was likely to be fielded in the constituency and a formal announcement would be made on Monday.
Narayanasamy's name was recommended by the Chief Minister, who is the CLP leader, and PCC President A V Subramanian, they said.
