PMK MLAs stage dharna in Assembly campus

india Updated: Aug 06, 2009 15:40 IST

All three PMK legislators staged a dharna outside the Assembly hall on Thursday in protest against the government's decision to to cull out 1.5 per cent from 20 per cent quota of Most Backward Classes to meet the 2.5 per cent reservation for notified Muslim OBCs.

The remaining one per cent would be from out of the 13 per cent quota earmarked for the Backward classes).

The three - RKR Anandharaman, P Arulmurugan and N G Panneerselvam - wearing black shirts had earlier walked out after a heated argument with Speaker R Radhakrishnan and Welfare Minister M Kandasamy in protest against the move.

Anandaraman told reporters later that the decision on special quota for notified Muslim OBCs was welcome, but not taking 1.5 per cent from the 20 per cent quota. The MBC quota was decided in 1999 as per State Backward classes Commission`s report, he said, adding that the government cannot unilaterally reduce it.

The Minority did not figure in the MBC list and so this move was "a clear betrayal" of the MBC population in Puducherry, he said and urged the government to scrap it and restore status quo ante and maintain 20 percent quota for MBCs.

Revenue Minister Malladi Krishna held talks with the MLAs after he came out of the Assembly and told them he would ask the Chief Minister to meet them and listen to their grievances. However, Anandaraman said they would continue the dharna till the government revoked its move to reduce the quota of reservation available for the MBC.
