Noted Malayalam poet Tirunellur Karunakaran died at his residence at Perinad near Kollam on Wednesday evening.
He was 82 and is survived by wife, two daughters and two sons.
Karunakaran had been keeping indifferent health for some time, family sources said.
He was closely associated with the Communist movement in Kerala and active in the progressive literary movement.
His works include 'Rani' and other collections of poems.
Karunakaran had taught literature in SN College in Kollam and University College in Thiruvananthapuram.
He had received several literary honours including the Kerala Sahitya Akademy award for outstanding contribution to literature and the prestigious Vayalar award.
He had also edited Janayugam Weekly for some time.
