THE FACE-OFF between the police and NSUICongress activists following the cane charging on Tuesday for burning the effigy of PWD Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya intensified when cases were registered against senior Congress leaders for rioting, unlawful restraint etc, while they were protesting against police action at the Chhoti Gwaltoli police station late in the day.
There were heated exchanges between senior Congress leaders and the police Tuesday night, especially additional SP (east) Manoj Shrivastava.
Congress leaders accused Manoj Shrivastava of working at the behest of Kailash Vijayvargiya and asked him to explain why police were mute spectators when Bajrang Dal activists burned effigy of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh a few days back, but thrashed NSUI activists when they burnt the effigy of Kailash Vijayvargiya.
Those booked under Sections 147, 149 and 341 included City Congress president Pramod Tandon, former minister Lalit Jain and former IDA chairman Kripashankar Shukla. Also booked in the same case were NSUI leaders Tantu Sharma, Jitu Sharma, Shakeel, Vibhash Sharma, Ashok Temle, Deependra Chhabra, Amit Chourasia, Bhuru Yadav, Deepak Wankhede, Mehmood Qureshi and 150 to 200 others.
In another case relating to burning of the effigy of Vijayvargiya near the university gates and subsequent scuffle and lathi-charge, police registered cases under Section 147, 149, 341, 353, 332 and 186 of IPC against Tantu Sharma, Jeetu Sharma, Shakeel, Vibhash Sharma, Ashok Temle, Deepak Chhabra, Amit Chaurasia, Bhuru Yadav, Deepak Wankhede and 15 to 20 others.
