Police crack the whip on drunk drivers

The traffic police have launched a massive drive at 16 different traffic points against drunk driving on Wednesday night. Prabhu Razdan reports.

According to traffic police, 160 motorists (of four-wheelers and two-wheelers) were found driving under the influence of alcohol in just four hour's time since the launch of the drive.

The police claim that those who had consumed liquor in excess were arrested and their vehicles impounded.

"During the four-hour drive against drunken driving, we found 160 drunken drivers against whom action has been taken," Atma Ram, SHO (traffic) said. "All these 160 drunken drivers were challaned besides 13 drivers were arrested on the spot and about 20 vehicles have been impounded across the city."

"We are in the process of verifying previous records of these 160 persons challaned for drunken driving," Vikas Arora, joint commissioner of police, Faridabad said.

"If any one of these has been challaned twice earlier for drunken driving, their driving licences will be cancelled," the joint commissioner added.

The drive against drunken driving started at 7pm on Wednesday night simultaneously at about 16 points, majority of those falling on National Highway 2. The prominent points where the checking took place included Sarai Chowk, Bhadkal Chowk, Old Faridabad, Ajronda Chowk, Metro More, Ankhir Chowk, Sainik Colony More, Sohna More etc.
