The city traffic police on Wednesday slapped fine on 163 motorists for drunken driving, catching the highest number of offenders in a single day.
A special drive against drunken driving, which was started from Kherki Dhaula, was carried out from 8 pm to midnight at 25 locations in the city, DCP (traffic) Bharti Arora said.
“Traffic police had challaned the highest number of violators in a single day. The drive was conducted under the supervision of DCP traffic,” said Alok Mittal, joint commissioner of police. “All these motorists will be produced before the court and if found guilty of consuming alcohol beyond permissible limit, they will be punished as per the law,” said Arora.
To keep check on frequent offenders the city police have asked the district court to impose a heavy fine and 15 days of imprisonment.
Meanwhile, the city police are also procuring 5,000 alcometers to carry out breath tests. The move will ensure safety and security for the commuters, said Arora. Urging people to avoid alcohol while driving, Arora said, “It is an irresponsible behaviour by which they not put their own lives at risk and cause problems for others”.
